A Poetic Dialogue between an Egoistic and a Pure Mind

I am a rational man; I know all.
I know the gravitational law. “Not the little why.”
I know the energy law. “Not the tiny why.”
I work with the body. “And forget the hidden heart.”
I know all. “But a subtle why.”

“One day the distant ‘Cipher’ will devour all,
Yet you dare not.”

The ‘cipher’ is far n small, I can ignore.
I know all, I can sermon all.
I am the king, I live like a king.

“Only till the ‘child’ is awake again.”
“Only if Nature has done all.”

Notes:
‘Cipher’ is ‘Death’ that takes away all that we have earned and accumulated throughout our life.

‘child’ is the feeble pure reasoning mind that is hushed by the dominant egoist mind which is a slave to fears, needs, desires, pleasures, preferences, and ideals. The child grows with time.

Text in double quotes is the voice of the frail but pure reasoning mind.

Thoughts

03/06/2023:
क्योंकि हम मरना नहीं चाहते, हम जीने के बहाने ढूँढ़ लेते हैं |

20/05/2023:
Look for the assumptions that govern your life; get rid of them.

01/03/2018:
Who is right and who is wrong when none knows the Truth.

01/03/2018:
Our whole life is an expression of an assumption we hardly question!

25/12/2017; 01/03/2018:
As I was moving from my present house to another, I had time enough to haggle and sell, donate or leave my belongings and drop my emotions one by one. At times, it was painful, but it gave me a chance to envision the day when I would suddenly leave this world for another, having no time to say goodbye.

One shall be ready to say goodbye in a blink with a smile to all that belong to him and all to whom he belongs to. Goodbye!

21/12/2017:
Those who are focused on the gross are condemned to remain confused.

28/11/2017:
Reasoning Mind at its best knows that it knows not.

28/11/2017:

The Mind governed by the Vital or the Heart, is sure. It knows not that it knows not.

11/11/2017:
All Life is an Experiment - a search for Truth, Bliss and Eternity - a search for God.

08/11/2017:
The immediate purpose of human life is to find the purpose of one's life.

22/04/2017:
O Man, in rope, you see a snake, get terrified and cry - Ignorance is the source of thy Pain.

The Yoga of the Mother Earth

On the Earth Day, my offerings to the Mother Earth

Few lines from Savitri which can be titled as 'The Yoga of the Mother Earth' highlighting her pivotal role in the Evolution, the Future of Mankind and the Creation (Savitri 050/22-052/14) :

पृथ्वी जड़ पद्दार्थ से बना हुआ एक गोला मात्र नहीं है, जो जड़ शक्तियों से बंधा हुआ, असहाय और दु:खी अपनी धूरी पर घूम रहा है |

पृथ्वी एक माता है, एक देवी है, एक शक्ति है, जो प्रभु के महान संकल्प - To Manifest Divine Life, Divine Being, or Superman on Earth, को सिद्ध करने के लिए कार्य कर रही है |

Along a path of aeons serpentine
In the coiled blackness of her nescient course
The Earth-Goddess toils across the sands of Time.

A Being is in her whom she hopes to know,
A Word speaks to her heart she cannot hear,
A Fate compels whose form she cannot see.

In her unconscious orbit through the Void
Out of her mindless depths she strives to rise,
A perilous life her gain, a struggling joy;
A Thought that can conceive but hardly knows
Arises slowly in her and creates
The idea, the speech that labels more than it lights;
A trembling gladness that is less than bliss
Invades from all this beauty that must die.

Alarmed by the sorrow dragging at her feet
And conscious of the high things not yet won,
Ever she nurses in her sleepless breast
An inward urge that takes from her rest and peace.

Ignorant and weary and invincible,
She seeks through the soul's war and quivering pain
The pure perfection her marred nature needs,
A breath of Godhead on her stone and mire.

A faith she craves that can survive defeat,
The sweetness of a love that knows not death,
The radiance of a truth for ever sure.

A light grows in her, she assumes a voice,
Her state she learns to read and the act she has done,
But the one needed truth eludes her grasp,
Herself and all of which she is the sign.

An inarticulate whisper drives her steps
Of which she feels the force but not the sense;
A few rare intimations come as guides,
Immense divining flashes cleave her brain,
And sometimes in her hours of dream and muse
The truth that she has missed looks out on her
As if far off and yet within her soul.

A change comes near that flees from her surmise
And, ever postponed, compels attempt and hope,
Yet seems too great for mortal hope to dare.

A vision meets her of supernal Powers
That draw her as if mighty kinsmen lost
Approaching with estranged great luminous gaze.

Then is she moved to all that she is not
And stretches arms to what was never hers.

Outstretching arms to the unconscious Void,
Passionate she prays to invisible forms of Gods
Soliciting from dumb Fate and toiling Time
What most she needs, what most exceeds her scope,
A Mind unvisited by illusion's gleams,
A Will expressive of soul's deity,
A Strength not forced to stumble by its speed,
A Joy that drags not sorrow as its shade.

For these she yearns and feels them destined hers:
Heaven's privilege she claims as her own right.

Just is her claim the all-witnessing Gods approve,
Clear in a greater light than reason owns:
Our intuitions are its title-deeds;
Our souls accept what our blind thoughts refuse.

Earth's winged chimaeras are Truth's steeds in Heaven,
The impossible God's sign of things to be.

But few can look beyond the present state
Or overleap this matted hedge of sense.

All that transpires on earth and all beyond
Are parts of an illimitable plan
The One keeps in his heart and knows alone.

Gita does not talk of Rebirth into Lower species

Gita does not talk of rebirth of man into lower species or beings of lower than human consciousness. Gita is talking of rebirth of man into lower or higher gradation of human consciousness depending on his acts in this life.

(14/15) मूढयोनिषुq [mūḍhayoniṣu] doesn't mean beings lower than human beings, it means ignorant men. Gita says that a Tamasic man is born among ignorant men (men of Tamasic consciousness).

(14/18) अधो गच्छन्ति [adho gacchanti] doesn't mean transmigration to beings lower than human beings. It means that a Tamasic man is born among lower men, men of Tamasic consciousness.

(16/19) आसुरिषु योनिषु doesn't mean transmigration to the world of Asura. It means that a man of Asuric nature is born into Asuric consciousness.

(16/20) अधमाम् गतिम् doesn't mean transmigration to lower beings. It means lowest of Asuric consciousness.

              रजसि प्रलयं गत्वा कर्मसङ्गिषु जायते ।
तथा प्रलीनस्तमसि मूढयोनिषु जायते ।। 14-15।।

14/15. Meeting with dissolution when Rajas prevails, he is born among those attached to action; and if dissolved when Tamas prevails, he is born in the wombs of beings involved in nescience. (*)

ऊर्ध्वं गच्छन्ति सत्त्वस्था मध्ये तिष्ठन्ति राजसाः ।
जघन्यगुणवृत्तिस्था अधो गच्छन्ति तामसाः ।। 14-18।।

14/18. Those who dwell in Sattwa rise upwards; those in Rajas remain in the middle; and those who are in Tamas, they, dwelling in the tendencies of the lowest Guna, go downwards. (*)

तानहं द्विषतः क्रूरान्संसारेषु नराधमान् ।
क्षिपाम्यजस्रमशुभानासुरीष्वेव योनिषु ।। 14-18।।

16/19. These evil and cruel haters, the vilest among men, I cast down constantly into Asuric wombs in the world. (*)

आसुरीं योनिमापन्ना मूढा जन्मनि जन्मनि ।
मामप्राप्यैव कौन्तेय ततो यान्त्यधमां गतिम् ।। 16.20।।

16/20. Cast into Asuric wombs birth after birth, these deluded ones, O Kaunteya, attain not to Me and sink down into the lowest status of soul-nature. (*)

Sri Aurobindo on Rebirth into lower beings:

“These words [mūḍhayoniṣu or adho gacchanti] do not necessarily refer to the animal birth, but it is true that there has been a general belief of that kind not only in India but wherever “transmigration” or “metempsychosis” was believed in. Shakespeare is referring to Pythagoras's belief in transmigration when he speaks of the passage of somebody's grandmother into an animal. But the soul, the psychic being, once having reached the human consciousness cannot go back to the inferior animal consciousness any more than it can go back into a tree or an ephemeral insect. What is true is that some part of the vital energy or the formed instrumental consciousness or nature can and very frequently does so, if it is strongly attached to anything in the earth life. ---” - The letters on Yoga-1,  no. 699.

(*) Translation of the Shalokas is from “The Bhagwat Gita” by P. P. Khetan

Gita does not ask man to reject or leave the world

Gita doesn't ask man to reject or leave the world for this world is transient and sorrowful. Instead it asks man to turn to God and worship Him for by doing so all his sorrows and pains will disappear in the All-blissful.

Gita (9/33)
किं पुनर्ब्राह्मणाः पुण्या भक्ता राजर्षयस्तथा ।
अनित्यमसुखं लोकमिमं प्राप्य भजस्व माम् ।।

"What then to say of the holy Brahmins and devoted king-sages; having come to this transient and unhappy world, do thou turn to Me and worship Me." The Bhagwat Gita, P. P. Khetan, pp. 349.

"The earthly world preoccupied with the dualities and bound to the immediate transient relations of the hour --- is for man, ---, a world of struggle, suffering and sorrow. The way to liberation is to turn from the outward to the inward, from the appearance created by the material life --- to the divine Reality which waits to manifest itself through the freedom of the spirit. Love of the world, the mask, must change into the love of God, the Truth. Once this secret and inner Godhead is known and is embraced, the whole being and the whole life will undergo a --- transmutation. In place of the ignorance of the lower nature absorbed in its outward works and appearances the eye will open to the vision of God everywhere, ---. The world's sorrow and pain will disappear in the bliss of the All-blissful; our weakness and error and sin will be changed into the all-embracing and all-transforming strength, truth and purity of the Eternal. " - Sri Aurobindo, "Essays on the Gita", pp-335; The Bhagwat Gita, P. P. Khetan, pp. 350.

Analyzing the Discussion (Revised)

At times, we get embroiled in endless arguments with no fruitful outcome and wonder why the person across the fence is not able to appreciate our point of view.

There are three things we exchange when we converse with someone, they are - a) Information b) Value-System and c) Opinion.

Information:

The first component we exchange in the discussion is information. If there is a dispute on the information we share, there is an easy way out - that is, to take the help of encyclopedia. This is all the more simple in the present world of internet.

Value-system:

The second component that we exchange in the discussion is our value-system. It is more involved, subtle and forms the part of our reasoning.

Reason has two components, i.e. the mathematical logic and the value-system. As far as the logic is concerned there is no conflict because logic is mathematical and universal.

However, when we take up social, national, ethical, religious or spiritual issues our discussions involve organic elements such as honesty, freedom, money, beauty, status, fears, health etc. that have no definite value. We need to assign some semblance of value to them before we can account for them. As these elements are unmeasurable, we assign them values that are subjective. It is here the differences in the reasoning creep in.

The value-system forms silently over a period of time, with time we identify with it and become possessive of it. Therefore value-system we possess can’t be altered over a short discussion.

If we don’t see the role of value-system in the discussion, we may argue endlessly without convergence. The way out is that we shall split the reasoning into logic and value-system, identify the differences in each other’s value-system, try to converge on common values if we can else accept each other’s individuality and agree to end the discussion in disagreement.

Opinion:

The third component that we exchange in the discussion is Opinion. Opinions also form over a period of time based on our knowledge, experiences, value-system, priorities, preferences etc. A single sentence, a single act or a single happening may dent it but will not be able to alter it altogether.

The problem with opinions is that we become passionate and emotional about them. With time our opinions become deep rooted, take possession of our mind and become inseparable from our personality.

After one has identified oneself completely with his opinions, he tries to enforce it upon the others, apparently to justify that he is right. We fail to recognize that just like our opinion is dear to us, other person is also possessive of his opinion and just as we have formed an opinion over a time, the other person has also formed his opinion over time.

The conflict in the discussion arises from the fact that we already have conflicting opinions even before we started the discussion.

The way to avoid such a conflict is to know (i) that during the discussion we are also sharing opinions, (ii) that the opinions are formed over a time and (iii) that they can’t be altered easily by single observation or information.

How to end the discussion:

Thus if we wish to engage in a fruitful discussion, we shall understand that outcome of any discussion depends on (i) information, (ii) value-system and (iii) opinion.

Since value-system and opinion can’t converge over the discussion we will hardly ever agree in any discussion.

And the best way to end the discussion is to end in disagreement with some addition to the information, a little bit modified value-system and a little bit altered opinion. This would generally be the outcome of any discussion.

Analysing the Discussions

At times, we get embroiled in endless arguments with no fruitful outcome and wonder why the person across the fence is not able to appreciate our point of view.

There are three things we exchange when we converse with someone, they are - a) Information b) Reasoning and c) Opinion.

a) The information we share may be right or wrong. If there is a dispute on that, the way out is to take the help of encyclopedia and move on.

b) Reasoning is mathematical and there shall be no disagreement on that. However, invariably the subject of discussion includes organic elements (elements such as honesty, freedom, money, beauty, fidelity, fears and health etc. that have no definite value) and need to be assigned values which are subjective and different. This assignment of different values to different parameters lead the two contestants to different conclusions and conflict.

The way out here is to identify the differences and try to converge on common values. However, it will be difficult. It would be better to agree to disagree. For example - (i) the two persons may value money and time differently and that would follow different spending habits, (ii) the two persons may have different tastes and would rate two films differently or (iii) the two persons may have different aims and would follow different professions and so on.

Instead of contesting someone's value system, we shall rather accept the individuality and know that we are all different.

c) Then comes the issue of opinion. Opinions form over a long period of time based on our knowledge, past happenings, value system, priorities and preferences etc. A single sentence, a single act or a single happening may dent it but may not alter it completely.

Invariably we become one with our opinions. We no longer remain rational but become passionate or emotional. With time our opinions become deep rooted, take possession of our mind and become inseparable from our personality. The association becomes so intimate that we become blind and are not unable to get rid of them.

Same is true with the other fellow and therefore discussion gets stuck up in an impasse.

The way out is not to enforce our opinion on the other.

The best way to enter into a fruitful discussion is to enter with an understanding that (i) we will end up the discussion after some stipulated time by agreeing to disagree (ii) we will only exchange information but no opinions and (iii) we will end up knowing that our value systems are different for we are different and different value systems would bring different results.

That we will end up by knowing a bit about the other, a bit about ourselves and will move on different paths although a bit altered after the interaction.

Twin Stars: Arundhati and Vashishtha

        Arundhati Nyaya:

This name comes from a pair of twin stars, consisting of ‘Vashishtha’ and ‘Arundhati’, found in the constellation of Great Bear or Ursa Major. The peculiarity of this pair of stars is that of the two, ‘Arundhati’ is a very faint star while ‘Vashishtha’ is a bright star. When someone looks at these stars, ‘Arundhati’ doesn’t show up easily. To show ‘Arundhati’ to a person, he is first asked to concentrate on ‘Vashishtha’ and then asked to look for ‘Arundhati’. This is how ‘Arundhati’ becomes visible. This method of moving from gross to subtle is called “Arundhati Nyaya” (अरुंधतीन्याय:) or ‘Arundhati-Darśana-Nyāya (अरुन्धतीदर्शनन्यायः). This is how God is explained with the help of an Idol, an Image or an Idea in Indian philosophies.

A Marriage Ritual:

Normally, in the case of twin stars, one star (the daughter) moves about the other one (the mother). However, in the case of the ‘Vashishtha-Arundhati’ twin star system, the two stars rotate about each other. The greatness of our ancestors was that they could know that such a twin star system exists and how they rotate even without the telescope.

During a Hindu wedding, after the Saptapathi ritual, the groom shows the bride the 'Vashishta-Arundhati' double stars as an example of the ideal couple symbolizing marital happiness and devotion.

This ritual also symbolizes that in married life, one person shall not revolve around the other, but the two shall move together, i.e. the two shall maintain their identity yet live together.
